October is Women's History Month, when we celebrate the achievements of women and girls who have shaped our past, are driving change today and are working to build a strong future for all!
The Government of Canada designated October as Women's History Month in 1992. Also this month, on Oct. 18, is Person's Day in Canada, which marks the day in 1929 when Canada's highest court of appeal handed down the historic decision to include women in the legal definition of “persons.” This gave some women the right to be appointed to the Senate of Canada and paved the way for women's increased participation in public and political life. Though this decision did not include all women at the time, such as Indigenous women and women of Asian heritage and descent, it did mark critical progress in the advancement of gender equality in Canada.
Women still face inequalities, such as wage gaps, underrepresentation in leadership and workforce barriers. There is still work to be done!

Temporary closure of Richardson Side Road scheduled for Oct. 5 to 16
Lanark County has contracted Crains’ Construction Ltd. to undertake roadway improvements at the intersection of Richardson Side Road and Drummond Concession 2 (County Road 10).
The road work is scheduled to begin Monday, Oct. 5 and is anticipated to conclude Friday, Oct. 16. A temporary road closure is required to complete intersection work on Richardson Side Road. Vehicle access will be restricted for the duration of the work.
For traffic local to Richardson Side Road, a signed detour route will be in place for the duration of the closure using Drummond Concession 1 and Ebert Road. Motorists are encouraged to follow all posted detour signage and allow for additional travel time. Only temporary impacts to traffic flow are anticipated on Drummond Concession 2.
“These improvements are being undertaken to enhance safety and maintain the county's transportation infrastructure for residents and road users,” said Sam Poole, Public Works Manager “We appreciate the public's patience and cooperation during this temporary closure and apologize for any inconvenience while this important work is completed.”
The county reminds motorists to exercise caution when travelling near the construction area, obey all traffic control measures and reduce speeds to ensure the safety of workers and other road users. ... See MoreSee Less

Update on the Pakenham 5 Span Bridge Reopening Date:
We would like to provide an update regarding the anticipated reopening of the Five Arches Bridge and clarify information shared in previous communications.
Some earlier updates did not include the planned bridge opening date. To ensure everyone has the most current information, the current target opening date for the Five Arches Bridge is October 30th, 2026.
We are ahead of schedule, but this timeline is largely dependent on the completion of some specialized finishing work that can't be rushed. It is possible that the opening date could be advanced depending on a number of factors. However at this time, October 30th is the scheduled opening date.
We look forward to celebrating with the community on October 3rd! This event was intentionally planned to happen in advance of the opening to give residents and visitors the unique opportunity to visit the site on foot to learn more about the project and truly explore the restoration of this iconic landmark.

October 1 is the United Nations International Day of Older Persons, which is a day to recognize the contributions of older persons/seniors and examine the issues that affect their lives.
The theme for 2026 is "The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives." This is important as, around the world, people are living longer than at any other point in history. This has implications on health systems, labour markets, housing and public policy and calls for societies to eliminate systemic ageism in order to support people throughout their lives.
